Realarcade ?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Realarcade ?

Has anyone dealed with realarcade? what kind of percentages do they give?

about 30% of net.

I would guess around 20-30% for first game developer if they accept your game at all.

they only give you 30%??

ah dunno man,
doesnt sound so good,

They do all the marketing and promotion, host the game, and handle support.

30% of Net, it depends on how they calculate Net. You may only end up getting between 10%-20% of the retail value.

@Warren, by marketing and promotion do you mean stick in on the website and see if anyone buys it? And with regard to support they will take the emails and forward them to you.

believe me 30% is good. Only people that beat that are Garage Games and Xbox Live which are both 50%.

Yeah I saw project offset. Just wish there was more evidence of gameplay. the videos look excellent and are all very well, but I can't tell if they are contrived just to show how pretty things can be. Or indicative of the kind of quality you can expect(with a lot of effort and time) on a high end card in game.

Erm, that's not true. Lots of other places offer more than 30%. I can't say that the rates they offered me are their standard rates, because most don't publish their rates. But there are a lot who are paying more than 30% to some/most/all of their developers.

BTW Doesn't Garage Games pay more than 50% if you use them exclusively? I thought they paid 65% for an exclusive, but maybe they've dropped that idea.

@ Slenkar : Frankly, I wouldn't be too concerned about the percentage that Real will give you. I'd be more concerned about :

1) Whether you've got a game they want.

2) The huge gaping hole in RealArcade security which lets you get every single game without paying them a cent and which is so easy and well-known that I can scarcely believe they've never fixed it. < And no, I'm not going to explain it, just in case there are some people who don't know. >

If anyone feels like discussing the actual percentages of portals, feel free to email me.

yeah, but very few people get exclusives, but garage games do offer 65% if they are intersted in your game and want it badly enough, which is probably unlikely in most cases unless your game is particularly good.

Maybe things changed in the last few months then. But more than 30% used to be pretty rare when I was doing the rounds. Was over a year ago though.

the security hole sounds pretty bad, Im still trying to save some money for some bandwidth to actually get my game out to the game reviewers

If you're interested in RealArcade, you won't need any money or bandwidth. They ask you to upload the game to their servers. This is also the case with BigFishGames. Some of the other portals may expect you to host the files on your ftp server so they can try your game.

I guess it depends what they do for their 70%. I think it sounds a bit crap to be honest but then again they are a big portal and if you try to sell yourself, 30% of nothing is well FA.

No, I mean they will email their hundreds of thousands of mailing list subscribers and tell them about your game.

But, hey, obviously you're smarter and more successful than those fools at RealArcade so you don't need them. You aren't submitting there, right?

My wife subscribes to RealArcade, she's never seen one of these emails? Are you sure they send them?

I've no interest in submitting to Real Arcade. Main reason is the *GAPING* security hole that Sybixsus mentioned. I also disagree with thier policy of favouring games that are similar or clones of historical best sellers. Just take a look at the top 5 games, how many Zuma Clones? And Yeah I'm smarter and more successful and I don't need them.

The gaping security hole sounds interesting :-)

Uh.... the Real Arcade has really bad security about it. but your game can get enough popularity.
Well, the RA interface looks not beautiful, but the functionality is.... pain.

However, compare among publishers before you really singned a contract is safer.

Huh. I wonder how they are able to build houses of money and most other portals barely survive then. And that's WITH a huge security hole that means nobody ever has to buy anything from them.

Magic? Alien intervention? Conspiracy!!1!

GameHouse
Alawar
Reflexive
BigFish
GarageGames

these are major ones,and more?

The existence of other portals (despite my use of the word 'most') means I'm wrong about Real.

I see the light! Thank ya, Jebus!!

I love these threads. Everyone's in uproar about evil, god and eventually someone will mention Iraq and how RealArcade is evil because they give troubled Iraqi programmers only 1% net.

How many people here will seriously finish -any- game, let alone the type accepted by portals (and I'm not talking to those who already have games for sale)?

I will, wait and see ...
I've a proven track record in business so I know how to finish stuff. I doubt I'll be using Real Arcade tho'

You do have a point of course, and luckily not everyone suceeds otherwise the market would be flooded and we would all make no money.

FWIW miniclip.com gives you 50% of net.

The only drawback is your game has to work in a browser, but we have released a number of blitz games and most have done pretty well. If you're interested you can email me and we can look at getting your game to work online (ben @ miniclip.com - without the spaces obviously).

... actually another drawback is we're pretty popular and have a very long waiting list so it will be a while before your game is released.

Hi Ben, sounds quite interesting. How well do you think you can activex a bmax executable? Good thing is, they can be quite small and also pack the data.

I have a product coming but I am targetting a release 2 months from now.

Bmax works fine, watch out for the release of cBubble in a web-browser near you.

You can test it now at http://www.cbubble.indiepath.com/cbubble_test.htm (IE Only and using a Demo of OSAKit).

Cool!

As long as it's a single file exe (moleboxed media) it should be fine.

If anyone does email me you won't get a response until Monday. I don't check my miniclip mail at home :)

Tim your cbubble doesn't work for me. I am using latest IE in XP SP2 and downloaded the OSA. What happens is a dialog appears saying "This a demo version", I click Yes, the loading bar goes to the end and the grey window disappears and nothing happens. Do you have to have "Enable third-party browser extensions" enabled in IE Internet Options? That's the only change I made to IE.

OSA is a bit of a nightmare and is not really feasible for commercial work, you need to lower the security to get it working. I am in the process of negotiating a deal with a company who has a much better delivery system than this. I am only using OSA here to prove that it can be done.

You could try the GEOM web demo: http://www.geomgame.com/geom_test.htm
Or Asteroids : http://www.centaur.indiepath.com/centaur_test.htm

PS. I'll give you a call later, the missus has got me gardening and I've managed to escape for 5 mins.

Hey Tim,

OSA is a bit crap, I had to install two things: one, the activex, and another vb dll thing that by rights I should never have to install, being xp and everything...

Gardening? Well it excites them I suppose.

Yeah OSA is out the window for good unless the developer gets his new version out soon and shares the source code.

Gardening yeah, one good deed deserves another - if you know what it mean :D

Yeah the missus got me taking everyone to the park then round town. I finally got a break under the pretense of work.

Geom works fine for me. Actually I remember playing it before, it's good.

Centaur is fine also. Sounds like a real arcade in the background inc. Space Invaders!

YEah, thats a sample from TRON and a few other FX all mixed up.

Sorry, we go way Off Topic...
