Good free webspace service?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Good free webspace service?
Hi!
I'm looking for a decent free webspace service to host my blitz projects.
Would be nice if someone could give me some hints here.
I think the words "good" and "free" are mutually exclusive. :)
Any provider is going to want something in return for providing you with webspace - probably a shed-load of banner ads and pop-ups.
If you buy a domain with some companies or use broadband from other companies, they often offer free webspace. e.g. Freeola. But I agree with Big10p.
Not sure, but I think legion.gibbering.net is back up...
If you don't mind the server going down fairly often, f2o.org is great if you can get a free account. Mention free stuff and it may work out better.
Both f2o and Legion have no ads, fast servers, and good service. (Excellent service with f2o, actually).
We apologize but f2o.org is not currently accepting free account applications.
And that Legion site still seems to be down.
Thought it was too god to be true. :)
What about:
50megs.com
freewebs.com
free.prohosting.com
geocities.com
doteasy.com
free-webhosts.com <-- a list of hosts.
I just purchased some active hosting from my ISP (less than £5 a month) and it's really good.
1&1 are also really good (but a tad pricey).
Petahosting are cheap but their hosting was too slow for me.
I'd have to recommend Geocities as a free host. Their speeds aren't great, but they are a pretty solid host. If slow speeds were causing you a headache I could host your downloadable files (no charge).
I'd have to recommend Geocities as a free host.
mmMMMMmmm.... o.O?
yeah. neat.. but dont host anything more than a few K else it'll be out of bandwidth ina few minutes!
Thanks for the info guys!
I can't affort buying webspace.
So I'll keep looking for a decent free service.
Hi again.
I got a new host, Roxr:
http://www.roxr.com/FreeHosting.htm200MB Space
30GB Banwidth per Month
FTP Acesss
No file limit size
10 MySQL Databases (For Forums, etc)
Only Cons:
You have to post on their forums regularly or
add 1 goggle add to your site.
Now, I know this isn't free but at www.unlimited-space.com.au you can buy your own .com domain with unlimited amount of webspace and 3 gig of monthly transfer for $89AU. I think that's around $65US. You get Cpanel, mysql, phpmyadmin, fantastico scripts and all the usual bells and whistles. I'm sure there are probably others but this is who I use.
To the average punter looking for a freeware or shareware download, having your own domain gives you more credibility. For this price why wouldn't you.
I can think why you wouldn't...
1) Downloading your shareware game at 2k/sec isn't going to impress anyone.
2) "our webservice is offline, engineers are investigating" is also not a good thing to see when you click Download.
3) How unlimited is unlimited? Do they have unlimited hard drive space to store your unlimited data?
4) They are probably reselling someone elses far better hosting package.
I know, the above points may well be over-exaggerated, I'm just playing devil's advocate ;)
Cheap hosting is always going to seem... well... cheap. If your ISP doesn't give you free webspace, change ISP. So long as they are top tier (rather than reselling another ISP's product) then you're pretty much guaranteed to have good connectivity to your webspace. You will probably lack PHP and MySQL, but it will be far better than Geocities.
If you can't change ISP, maybe find a friend who can host your website.
