What do game publishers do?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/What do game publishers do?

I have this feeling i posted something like this before but i couldn't find it in the search so i asusmed that was a dream i had one night.

What do they do? I was thinking about this last nigh and decided that it included:

1. Getting the manufacturing sorted out
2. Promotion
3. Paying the people developing the games while they develop

So not a very productive nights thinking really. What have i missed out?

4. Keep all the money and pay you a pittance.

5. Stressing you with deadlines.

6. Imposing your miss-guided, non-researched, corporate-guided, non-gaming-derived feelings of what the consumer wants onto the product.
7. Advertising the game with "screenshots" from the 8 second intro FMV

wild guess:

8. Keep the rights of the gamecharacters/ideas/themes, thus being enabled to hire another team to make a sequel to your game..

(?)

9. Save you from your existing crappy office job.

9. Developing and maintaining distributing channels (online or retail). This can cost.

10. Make you rich beyond your wildest dreams (provided you negotiated a good contract otherwise point 4 applies)

11. /me Slaps Lenn for not being able to count :)

publish games ? - lol

I thought a publisher did the same job as a Video Game Publisher, Music Publisher, Book Publisher, Movie Publisher. They publish, hence the name publishers.
