DirectX Question

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/DirectX Question

I had this idea to write a little movie player that supports interlaced playback for both, PAL/SECAM and NTSC (50HZ and 60Hz). Since this is going to be an inhouse tool to get some WYSIWYG control over movies that will be burned on DVD, it is acceptable to me to set the refresh rate of the screen manually. Unfortunately I cannot set the refresh rate of windows to 50Hz in the graphics settings, the card settings allow only "Standard", "Optimal" and "60Hz". So I think it would be possible to set the Refresh Rate to 50 Hz in the DXDiag Settings. There is an button named "Disable DirectDraw RefreshRate". When I click it there's 2 options: "Standard Refreshrate" and "Value for Disabling" where the second option allows to enter a value.

I don't get it, refreshrate for disabling refresh? However, probably it's only poorly translated, so I take it I can set a new refresh rate here. But what do I need to enter here, HZ or Frametime in Millisecs?

And I also need to know if I got to reboot the machine if I have altered the dx refresh rate.

cmon - it's not the spanish flu - it's only a question. Can't be that hard for you gurus.

BTW: I tried it with a value of "50", assuming this will be Hz. Unfortunately the time between two Vwaits still remains 16.6ms (that's default, 60Hz), tested in fullscreen 3D Mode, even used to reboot the machine. Seems to have no effect. BTW my machine waits zero ms when I use Flip true, it's a LCD screen.

An other question. wasn't there a DLL to force a refresh rate? Does anyone remember where it is?

Bah - I'll start a revolution. The king is dead. :P long glive the king. o_O

I just solved this. Windows (or catalyst) completely refused to let me set anything but 60 Hz. In fact I thought there was some evil laughter between the cpu and the harddrive. So I took the challenge and once again I was mastering the AI:

I had to set the TV-out to "force detection of TV device" so catalyst had to assume there is a PAL (50Hz) TV, even when it didn't recognized one (cause there isn't a tv, of course). Additionally I had to enable the "play on both (Monitor and TV)" Button. Since catalyst is forced to sync the TV signal @ 50Hz it is now using 50 Hz for the monitor too - exactly what I was looking for!

Now I am able to play PAL Movies fully interlaced, aka simulate a TV perfectly. A (50Hz) DVD Movie will now run smooth the first time on this machine. (I still cannot understand people watching 50Hz or 60Hz DVDs on a 75Hz desktop...). However, I need this, as described before, to get some visual control on how a film will actually look on a TV (if you play it with 25 or 30 Frames progressively, a lot of jittering artefacts cannot be seen, eg. when you have messed up the order of the fields TFF and BFF). Nuff said.

Lol try giving more than a single hour for a response ;]

Personally, I set refresh rate to 100 :)

BTW, since most 50Hz DVD's only manage to complete a frame on every other update (i.e. 25Hz) watching a deinterlaced DVD at 75Hz keeps things nicely in sync.

DVD's are old now anyway. I watch HDTV downloads at 1920x1080 :D
