HalfLife2 did you do this?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/HalfLife2 did you do this?

Reading Enay's thread 'An interesting read' reminded me of a situation I found myself in, in HalfLife2.

The robot 'dog' opens the door to the old city and after a while you find yourself at the bottom of the stairs and there is a ladder which you need to climb.

The ladder is caged in, and you don't appear to be able to climb it.

Ok I thought, thinking laterally , I have to pile up all these boxes etc. to get above the caged part and so climb the ladder.

Many minutes passed but I succeeded in creating a makeshift pile of objects to climb up and get above the caged part of the ladder.

Expecting my work to pay off, I jumped onto the top part of the ladder, above the caged part and tried to climb the ladder....funny thing was I couldn't!

It was only then that I saw the padlock, locking the caged part of the ladder...a single bullet later it was unlocked and I was climbing.

Am I the only one to make this mistake...thinking HL2 was nextgen and after hearing so much about physics and stuff I assumed that I had to build a staircase above the caged part of the ladder, but all I needed to do was shoot the lock off -.-

I felt rather let down that
1) I had spent so much time trying to find a solution and
2) When I did find a solution that would work in the real world, it didn't work in HL2's 'so realistic physics' world lol

Did anyone else get caught out by this?

I can't remember.

I did actually build myself a little house out of stuff on one level - well, more of a hut. I liked it.

I remember early in the game there is a sort of caged/barred door that has a padlock - but that is before you get a weapon.

No.
From the start I knew that I have to think stupid to progress the game. Plus I had modeled some maps for Half Life 1(Not professionally of curse) and i knew that the ladder was just a trick.

puki, yes, your right, ive even cheated for a gun and shot it off, does nothing i believe

hmm, im with you shambler also.

I wand to say somemore about Half Life 2.
The game it's stupid as stupid is Doom 3. The deference is that Half Life 2 team was 200+ people of the Doom 3 team. And as Half Life 1 trigers do all the job for the A.I.
Domm's 3 A.I. was more fair for me. They are monsters and tey are stupid(Fair). Like Serius Sam's Monsters and Doom 1.

I did the same thing with the boxes and climbing the
ladder and then noticed the padlock. poor decision in
the level designer.

I didnt do it in that part of the game, but I can recall two other times where I did do as you explained in areas where I thought I had to reach something I thought I could build a pile up to, just to learn there's a damn invisible barrier in the way.

Linear games these days........seems the last FPS I really enjoyed immensely was Deus Ex.

Hey, chuff my old sausage!!!

Let's have a hut building competition in HL2 - people could post pictures of their homemade huts.

I think this idea is totally Large to the point of being huge.

i don't think i ever got that far...

the game made me really sick during the water boat levels... so i stopped playing, and never touched the it again since...

ok... so i'm a whimp burger... alright...

but i do plan to get back into it when i get a better video card...

and a pack of dramamine...

Years ago in Deus Ex I piled dustbins to jump over a fence and go back to a previous game area, it was cool!

I did the same exact thing, Shambler... don't really think it was poor level design, however...

I loved HL2... some of the areas had so many different possibilities for how to solve (such as the prison levels)

the game made me really sick during the water boat levels...

but Mike...you were in the Navy!

200+ people makes up Valve?

Well, not full time that has to be wrong.

Ive counted before, its around 70.

For those that like building

Shambler - i spent about half an hour trying to get up those boxes to the ladder. :( Until I saw the padlock..

i was in the Air Force... too much water in the Navy... and it takes tooo long for those boats to get where they're going...

i just happen to like subs because it is like flying blind under ifr... add to that the idea of locating and prosecuting an enemy by using only instruments and a lil math to come up with a targeting solution, then firing a weapon, taking him out, and never even seeing him... or him ever even knowing you are there... hey, replicating a scenario like that in a pc game would be big fun big fun...

even the idea of just navigating underwater is fascinating... like in the Hunt For Red October, when they were running the Reykjennes Ridges (Red Route One)... submerged, and with no windows, running along an underwater canyon at 25 knots... it's like flying an ifr approach down to minimums at Innsbruck... mountains on either side of you... not too much room for a mistake...

I like sausages coz they are shaped like submarines and you can eat them - plus, you can take them in the bath with you and play subs with them, then eat them.

That was almost a romantic statement, but it wasn't, or even close. :D

But anyway, <insert something about half life 2 piling>

I couldn't think of anything to keep on topic, but I'm sure you could put something there so that I don't have to.
