Anyone know of a free version of this that will run on a modern PC?
Gauntlet
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Gauntlet Get MAME.
Just to say, Gauntlet > Gauntlet2 :)...
MAME-> thanks big10p!

When I first saw MAME many years ago, I nearly fainted with excitement! Many evenings later, after playing all my childhood dreams for free, I was just like a pig in s**t, as they say. Plus I had to download the suckers on some kinda ancient 28.8k modem at the time. Also it used to be really hard to find the ROMS, all these stupid warez sites with broken links and old version etc.

hehe me too. I couldn't believe I could play the actual arcade Pac-Man on my PC - I was like a kid on Christmas morning. :P Get Gauntlet 4 if you can. That had a cool story mode.

There's even do-it-yourself instructions for assembling real arcade machines around a PC running mame, if you want the authentic experience... the big difference now that you can end up with tens of thousands of games on a single machine.
xlsior,
I'm going to build a cabinet as you outlined once we move. Got some proper joysticks and buttons to use - can't wait. Metal Slug here we come!!

Wow that works!...at least it did the first time.
Now when I run it , it just comes up with a button test diagnostic...must rtfm.

Try F2 (which should reset the emulated game)
Working again OK now, but I must say the gauntlet I downloaded looks like the original and rather bland by what should be achievable these days.
Is there an eye candy gauntlet clone available?, doesn't have to be a Mame game.

I hope you don't mind me advertising stuff I'm working on but I have been working on a gauntlet style arcade game in blitz3d which is shown in this forum thread:

There are still a few issues with it and it is not quite finished but is playable, has about 20 levels. Joystick/Gamepad input only though at the moment (upto 4 players).

Shambler - It looks exactly like the original arcade version, because to all intents and purposes it is. MAME emulates all the chips in the original arcade machine and runs a copy of the original arcade roms.
I have always been partial to the Lynx version of Gauntlet.
@Matty yes I've ssen that, got no gamepad though lol
@Nomen luni yes I realise that, I was hoping someone had done a non Mame 2D rewrite...also was thinking of writing one in BMax...time is an issue though.
I was also thinking of writing similar in Blitz3D, not sure how it would translate to 3D though...needs to have alot of enemies on screen at once and be fast!
