I have done a 3d adventure game in which the player has to find some cannon balls before being able to fire a cannon and blast open a door. I have not yet found out how to fire a missile in 3d so I had a problem.While watching a world war 2 film on tv I realized that you do not usualy see a shell going through the air. You only see the target exploding. It was easy to swap the door for a damaged door and the sound effect was convincing. Of course in a shootemup it is more fun to see the missile but it is not realistic exept in the hollywood sense.

If it's cannon balls you're firing, you certainly would be able to see them when fired. Infact, I expect the WWII shells would be visible too - anti-aircraft flak is visible in the night sky and actually looks like it's travelling pretty slowly. It's not visible in the film because they're not actually firing shells! :)

However, I think actually seeing the ball hit the door and destroy it is part of the player's reward. Just seeing the door change state from normal to destroyed would be a bit of a gip, I think. If the cannon is close to the door, you could just have a cloud of smoke instead, I suppose. :)

There was no question , I just wanted opinions. I was in a Commando unit in ww2 and never saw any shells in the air. Mind you I had my head down a lot of the time. I like the cloud of smoke idea.In an adventure game its mostly about solving puzzles but I suppose a little arcade action could be included at some point.

Sorry I misunderstood you Gord. Although I've never seen a cannon fire I've read a little about Napoleonic warfare and have read stories about the soldiers being able to see the cannon balls as they skip along the ground
