C'mon. Gimmi da GUI
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/C'mon. Gimmi da GUI
Tomorrow's friday.
Let it go.
We'll be polite when we report them tiny, tiny bugs.
:)))))))))))))))))))
Peter. I dont see that happening after how crap some people responded to the christmas present last year.
Its like receiving a present then going "I dun like it!" straight to their face :)
START THE GAME ALREADY. FOOD PLEASE. :) MOnnnk, I NEED A MONNK.
Yep, I agree. Its time for the GUI module to appear in all it's greatness.

Where? I thought the Beta present last christamss went smoothly and everyone was chuffed.
P.S if you're wondering what the first sentence is it just means that I play to much Age Of Empires. :/
last Christmas!!!!! was it that long ago...
:)

.. I gave you my heart...
What GUI module?
Eh? :/
uh? eh? :\
theres always haters on every forum, they are just being brats or trying to control things, just ignore them BRL!
I'm not a hater, I'm an instigator - Aligator - radiator. O.o

Actually, it's not. Because most people don't expect you to pay for your present. In fact, I consider my purchase of BlitzMax while it was in beta a present to Blitz Research, because I made no use of BlitzMax whatsoever until it was out of beta. Sort of a kickback for the money they'd helped me make from Blitz3d. I'd also agree with Amon that I saw no crap responses.
I've made nothing with BlitzMax since I bought it in beta. I considered it as a support to BlitzRA. I'm waiting for complete BlitzMax before I do anything special with it.
I love BlitzMax.
I'm more productive than ever.
I'll pay whatever Blitz Research want me to the second the GUI module is out. ;)

Okay, my point wasnt totally valid.
I did see alot of foul responses, but generally, looking back now, it wasnt as bad as it seemed and the most of the community was great with it. I certainly appreciated it, even if i havent used it yet.
Cyg, your stock just rose a few poits in my book...
to look back and admit that maybe he may have been a lil off... good man...

Heh, Thanks. Well, you get nowhere by arguing an invalid point. :)
hello?
What GUI module?
I think they're on about the GUI module for BlitzMAX.
Just maybe.
What's so good about that?
*shrugs*
I'd rather have a 3D module than some GUI one.
Yeah - 3d module for me - probably not till next year now - before we know it it will be christmas again !
Perhaps BlitzMax should be renamed to BlitzMin ( becoming Max over the course of several eons);)
theres always haters on every forum, they are just being brats or trying to control things, just ignore them BRL!
The last post in this thread before it went to hell =]
Because most people don't expect you to pay for your present.
Except of course for the fact that you didn't pay for those betas, you paid for the Mac version, which was not a beta. So that whole paragraph is nullified.
I'd also agree with Amon that I saw no crap responses.
Then you weren't looking. The negative posts didn't really stop anytime between around 6 months before BMax was released, to around Feburary this year. And now the GUI is apparently almost due out, it's been starting again.
I'm waiting for complete BlitzMax before I do anything special with it.
I'm confused, you should have it by now.
I certainly appreciated it, even if i havent used it yet.
Same here! It was
great looking at the language before it was officially out. I probably won't get a chance to use the GUI module, but that won't stop me from grabbing it the day it's out =]
I'll use it one day down the track. Probably. =]
Perhaps BlitzMax should be renamed to BlitzMin
BlitzMax is in relation to it's core language, not the modules plugged in to give it extra oomph. The language kicks ass.
I'd rather have a 3D module than some GUI one.
I want a 3D GUI. How long do you reckon I'll have to wait?
Vista.
Except of course for the fact that you didn't pay for those betas, you paid for the Mac version, which was not a beta. So that whole paragraph is nullified.
It's rather presumptuous of you to tell me what I paid for. I don't have a Mac, nor any intention of buying one soon, so I most certainly did not pay for the Mac version and I most certainly *did* pay for the betas. Neither you or I can know for certain whether it was the intention that people would part with their money for the betas, but I'd drop dead with shock if it wasn't anticipated to some extent.
It's rather presumptuous of you to tell me what I paid for.
No it's not. I know for a fact that you didn't pay for betas, because BRL at no time were charging for them. It's really pretty simple. The BlitzMax info page said it was available for Mac and the purchase button lead to a page on ShareIt saying you are buying the Mac version. Then when you paid, you were sent the link to download the Mac version. I know this, because that is the procedure I went through and there were no alternatives.
The fact that you don't own a Mac doesn't disqualify any of that. I don't own a Mac either, but I was at least careful enough to know what I was purchasing before I did so. I had ulterior motives.
Unless you managed to find some dodgy 3rd party saler somewhere, but I find that extremely unlikely, not only because BRL aren't really big enough for weird dodgy business to notice them, but also because you've been here long enough to know how BRL market their gear.
Neither you or I can know for certain whether it was the intention that people would part with their money for the betas
Well, I know that some people
intended to pay for the betas, I guess you were one of them, but of course since they weren't for sale they were obviously mistaken.
Blitz Research themselves seem to have been mistaken too then. You must be the only person who's right.
By your definitions, I should be able to walk into a supermarket, pick up a "buy one get one free" packet of biscuits and leave without paying because I just took the free pack. After all, they're not selling the free packs.
.

I'm afraid you seem to have a strange comprehension of the English language that I'm not capable of helping you with.
By your definitions, I should be able to walk into a supermarket, pick up a "buy one get one free" packet of biscuits and leave without paying because I just took the free pack.
Actually, by my definitions, no, you get a free packet when you buy one, it's not 'buy none get one free' as you yourself said. I honsestly have no idea how you came to that conclusion.
After all, they're not selling the free packs.
That's the key sentence there. They're -not- selling the free packs. But that doesn't mean that the pack is yours. Clearly, the free pack is the property of the supermarkets, who have 'generously' informed you that they will give it to you for no charge if you buy one of the packs that -are- for sale. Again, it really is a case of just reading what you are buying. In this instance, you seem to have read the last half of the sentence only. In the other instance, you seem to have put words in BRL's mouth. So at least it balances out.
I'm afraid you seem to have a strange comprehension of the English language that I'm not capable of helping you with.
Coming from someone who's spent the past three posts trying to demonstrate that making an item available when someone gives you money and that person receiving said item having paid said money does not constitute buying, I'm definitely going to take that as a compliment.
In the other instance, you seem to have put words in BRL's mouth.
The words have not been put in their mouth by me. They said of their own free will that purchasing at Xmas bought you a license for all three versions. You're the one arguing against BRL.
As it happens though, I'm prepared to defy logic, common sense and the English language and agree with you that I bought the Mac version and nothing else. But rather than nullifying my point, it strengthens it no end. It was a heck of a Xmas present to Blitz Research when I bought something I didn't want and may never use.
The BlitzMax info page said it was available for Mac and the purchase button lead to a page on ShareIt saying you are buying the Mac version.
It also stated back then that you would have access to the PC & Linux versions as they get released at no extra charge, and I'd assume Syb was paying for that ahead of time, with the beta's being a little bonus to tinker with.
As for the BMax GUI, I'm assuming that would mean a B+ update would be around the corner no? Skid' has mentioned a couple times that both programs are working off the same GUI base or something.

The problem here is that I CLEARLY havn't been debating that you bought something. I take your word for that 100% and always have. You just don't understand what you bought and it seems no amount of education will help you think otherwise. That's OK, it's your world.
They said of their own free will that purchasing at Xmas bought you a license for all three versions.
Yes, and that's what you eventually received, but not until well after Xmas.
It was a heck of a Xmas present to Blitz Research when I bought something I didn't want and may never use.
That's better. =] Except of course for your ulterior motives, which were very similar to mine.
the beta's being a little bonus to tinker with.
I know that, he knows that, but he still seems to insist that it's -THEM- that he bought. Back then,
these links did not exist.
As for the BMax GUI, I'm assuming that would mean a B+ update would be around the corner no?
Yup! The working title of the MaxGUI module (which, incidentally, seems to me to have been named by the community based on Max2D and Max3D) was 'the BlitzPlus module'... Skid has stated numerous times that after MaxGUI is out and teething problems sorted, the changes will filter into BlitzPlus. This is too little too late for me. BlitzMax was the language I wanted from the beginning ;]
Gimme events and I'll do the gui myself ^_^ I'm really amazed everyone refers to the GUI and not really that much to the events-system.. it's equally important, if not 1% more important .. (imho)
..ahwell, let's wait a little more..
I agree. Events are ultimately more important for the sort of things i'd use max for.
OK LarsG I'll play; but the very next day you gave it away....... ;O)
thiiiiiiiiiiiiiis year to save us from tears,
they'll give us that GUI special...
finally.. someone got it!!! ;)
hehe
Hmm. I always just figured the events system would be a compulsory part of the GUI system =]
Hmm, so did I :)
I for one am looking forward to seeing it... any speculation on weather it will be "skinnable" or have themes... or I suppose have themes that you can modify?
As for win32, highly unlikely I'd say. Unless XP support specifically gets added in... It's probably much easier with Cocoa or FLTK, but BRL have this 'if you can't do it on one platform the other platforms suffer' mentality.
What is so exciting about this GUI thing?
You get to do stuff with it.
...
Plus we all know the GUI is coming out first, so the sooner the GUI comes out, the sooner everyone can start nagging BRL about the 3D module.
Well it's nearly done according to Marks's Worklog - wonder what SuperStrict mode is though.
http://www.blitzbasic.com/logs/userlog.php?user=1&log=507
wonder what SuperStrict mode is though.
Weren't there some people asking for Strict to make sure that the :Int, :String, etc bits were included (shame on me for not knowing the proper terminology!). Perhaps it does something like that?
I'm surprised (when browsing the bmax forum) that ppl do bla:int all the time, while (iirc) the manual states that without anything, it's an int by default.. just like in B+ and B2d/3d..
To me it's exactly these things that moves a language to a more cryptic nature.
blah:int=CreateBlah()
or
blah=CreateBlah()
I dunno about others.. but I like the latter one over the first one..
Oh, no, I hope SuperStrict does -everything- everyone wanted it to do, because if a new command keeps getting created for every little oversight instead of modifying the original behaviour, well... I'm not looking forward to seeing : MoreStrict, TerriblyStrict, SuperGo!Go!Strict, HardassTeacherStrict, NotAtAllStrict, AllYourStrictAreOurs or StricterThanAStrictThingOnStrictsday.
Neither you or I can know for certain whether it was the intention that people would part with their money for the betas, but I'd drop dead with shock if it wasn't anticipated to some extent.
I'll take that bet.
You get to do stuff with it.
And when people ask "What kinda stuff" you get to say "Cool stuff". :o>
Any news, roumers, hearsay or even speculations?
My bet is it's taking so long because Blitz Research wants to have a rock solid multiplatform grid control in there before release.
Latest news is that they're squashing the last few (minor) bugs before release..
Myabe they're writing the docs.....................
(unlikely)
Hate to pee on parades but I feel gui lib is least welcome expansion. I have absolutely no need for one and would have preferred improvements to 2D and greater progress in 3D.
well.. you might not have any use for it, but I bet there are others here just dying to get their hands on it.. :)
The GUI is also to improve window support and the IDE in the core product.
Yes for sure LarsG. When I started to make a try to create a small game I came across the classic game design theory that I have to create a level editor so it will be mach easier to test and create. I created a small GUI to use but because I don't have experience in programming I cached my self to tracking done bugs of my GUI and left the main game engine in dust. After a week of hell(cause I don't like this GUI programming)I have seen Blitz Support to make a comment before three weeks that the qui will be out in 2 days and I said to my self forget the GUI I will use the good one from the BRL that it will probably will turn classic in a week. So no progress for me.
Yes. Yes. 3 weeks is a bit of a long time for 'minor bug fixes'. A 'couple of days' 3 weeks ago doesn't even match up with my 'BRL estimate * 3' theory. Come on BRL =]
And when people ask "What kinda stuff" you get to say "Cool stuff". :o>
I'm more the sort of annoying individual that would say something closer to 'GUI stuff' =]
Can you pleeeeeeeese make it so I can dish over my hard earned cash for this already?
I wonder if the GUI module will be a Christmas present?
I promised mark I would keep my mouth shut last year because I "gave him a headache" with my "is it done yet!?" nagging. But... It's a new year... And surely he's taken some aspirin since then... So.
IS IT DONE YET!?!?!? CAN I HAVE IT NOW!?!?!?!?
Shut up Kanati. This year I'll make an ass of myself for you, how about that.
Is it done yet? Is it done yet? A couple of weeks was up two months ago! My BRL estimate * 3 theory has gone WAY out the window! Christmas sucks! Now now now!
What if they want to release both the GUI and the 3D Module on Christmas day so we have to sit there helplessly until the shops and stuff open again -- and the 3D module is actually complete but Mark said it would take so long to help build more interest.
Mark said it wouldn't be till next year for the 3D module.
I have since written my own GUI, and it is very simple I guess. I suppose it's a matter of what you want, need and if you need the native look.
I only needed it for an editor, and now it's done I can use the same code for the title/options screen in-game.
But that editor is prolly like those GUI's for b2d/b3d.. right? A full 'application' in one outputwindow, without using windows/OS-events. I do think the ppl waiting for the GUI module are waiting for this event/OS part, otherwise they'd already be using one of the community-GUIs.
I would much rather have a 3D module than a GUI module.
Mark said it wouldn't be till next year for the 3D module.
Hmm, Xmas 04 for BlitzMax, Xmas 05 for MaxGUI and Xmas 06 for Max3D?
Now now now!
I would much rather have a 3D module than a GUI module.
Yeh, well, tough. =]
I would much rather have a 3D module than a GUI module.
Now is a good time to learn that the world doesn't revolve around what you want.
Im so tired of seing such statements in these forums. Then again, its my fault for visiting them.
Forgive me for my nincompoopness ^_^, as I'm kinda n00b on 3d,.. but why are ppl who are waiting on the 3d-module not using that standard OGL 3d-stuff in bmax?
why are ppl who are waiting on the 3d-module not using that standard OGL 3d-stuff in bmax?
Because that requires learning the OGL API commandset. They want everything nicely wrapped for them, like B3D's entity system. :)
Forgive me for my nincompoopness ^_^, as I'm kinda n00b on 3d,.. but why are ppl who are waiting on the 3d-module not using that standard OGL 3d-stuff in bmax?
Cheeky answer: Because they suck.
More useful answer: Because it is the belief of most people (yours truely included) that the 3D module will provide more than an abstact interface for rendering polygons, like collision detection and response, occlusion, physics, dynamic lighting and such, all in a nice abstract (cough) well documented (cough) interface.
All this ofcourse designed to minimalize your OpenGL knowledge requirements, and focus on developing their games, rather than their 3D engines. In short for all the same reasons someone might license any other middleware 3D engine - except probably cheaper.
But uhm.. I see ppl making own GUIs in bmax, while there isn't any event-system yet (afaik) .. doesn't anyone bother to make a 3d-engine then, like the 3d-module from BRL?
A reason to have a GUI module first, rather than a 3d-module, would be the event-system I'd say, because that's something native of the OS.
CS, you're being thoughtful and constructive. Please, we'll have none of that in here!
doesn't anyone bother to make a 3d-engine then, like the 3d-module from BRL?
There are people already doing exactly that: Erlicht and Dreidee among others are alternate 3D modules for BlitzMax in currently in development.
But 'the masses' are waiting for Mark's 3D engine, since this is bound to be the 'standard' one. Many like Blitz3D's syntax, setup, etc. and hope that the BlitzMax 3D module will offer that and more...
Now
personally I have absolutely no talent (or desire) for 3D programming -- I'm more than happy with just the 2D stuff.
As for the gui, why not try something like I-Glass?
Haven't tried I-Glass, but from what I read in the bmax-topics it's not a native OS-style/OS-event driven GUI, like for example B+ is. If there are native OS-events I wouldn't even mind making my own gadgets; a window, a panel and a canvas would prolly be enough gadgets for me to create buttons, scrollbars, the whole stuff. I already made gadgets like that in B+ and they work splendidly.
The primary thing I'm waiting for with that GUI-module are those OS-events.
Mark has stated that the event system will be independant of MaxGUI - so Max2D and the rest of Max can benefit from it as well... question is... does the event system come free or do you only get it if you buy MaxGUI?
Working flawlessly across 3 platforms, it's bound to be a large part of the MaxGUI purchase, if you ask me. And once you have a proper event system at your disposal it's hard to force yourself to use the old polling commands... I can quite easily see MaxGUI becoming a compulsary purchase if you want to run any example/pd code without a lot of tweaks and changes. So a lot of people who are saying 'I don't want or need MaxGUI' might need to end up getting it anyway.
[/conspiracy theory]
I would guess it's free... (the compiler core change I mean)
I mentioned nothing about the compiler core =] I was strictly talking about the event system...
