Playing music during play

Hello, I've written a little game and now trying to have music playing during the game.

I'm using the PlayMusic command. My problem is that if I play a .mid file I am finding the screen animations to jitter now and again. I am sure there is enough processor time available. (if I take the Vwait out it runs fast with the .mid playing). I think it is a timing issue with playing .mid files?

I 'borrowed' a .mod tune and it works perfectly.

Also does anyone know where to get free tunes/music from on the internet?

I haven't really used .mid files in Blitz, so I'm afraid I can't help with your first issue. As for the second, fellow Blitzer MuffinRemnant has made some short MP3s available at http://www.artefact-rescue.co.uk/music/

entering a search for freebie sounds and utilities in Google will get you a ton of hits. Making your own sounds is a fun part of making a game, well, I like it, and I have no musical gift at all, but software comes to the rescue. Here are a few links to handy game utilities:

I haven't actually tried it, but Sonic Foundry have a good rep, and its free, so i must download it myself...

If you want effects and stuff, search for "software synthesizers", there are some free ones, good for making goofy sounds too...

"Quack Sound Effects Studio" is cool, and not too hard, its shareware...

Just a note:

check the licensing for "free" sounds - sometimes there are conditions you don't care to meet. I've noticed some sound libraries are free to musicians, but refuse permission to game writers to use the sounds as backgrounds or effects, so there!

Avoid using mid if possible - 4 1 thing they really sound naff wen used in most games.


Absolutely, and of course being the internet some "free" music etc. is likely 2 b nicked from other web sites. There r a couple of DVDs and CDs with music and sound collections on that u can pick up 4 use in games - don't know wat they r like though... though I'm sure someone on this forum does.

The program I am working on right now uses .mid files for music with no problems whatsoever.


Later on I will convert the .mid files to .ogg so that they retain the same sound I hear out of my speakers.
